Is DTH Dying in India? Future of Satellite TV vs OTT in 2026

The television industry in India is going through a major transformation. Traditional Direct-to-Home (DTH) services are facing strong competition from Over-The-Top (OTT) streaming platforms such as Netflix, YouTube, and Disney+ Hotstar. Many users are now asking a common question: Is DTH becoming outdated?

This article explains the future of DTH services in India and how they compare with modern OTT platforms.

What is DTH and OTT? 📡📱

DTH (Direct-to-Home) is a satellite-based television service that delivers TV channels through a dish antenna and set-top box. Popular DTH providers in India include:

Tata Play
Airtel Digital TV
Dish TV India

OTT platforms deliver content through the internet, allowing users to watch movies, web series, and live TV on mobile phones, smart TVs, and laptops.

DTH Subscriber Numbers Are Declining

In recent years, the number of DTH subscribers in India has been steadily decreasing as more viewers shift to streaming platforms. Reports show that the pay DTH subscriber base has dropped significantly since 2021 due to the rising popularity of OTT services.

By the end of 2025, active pay DTH subscribers in India had fallen to around 50–57 million, reflecting a continuous decline each quarter.

This trend indicates a structural shift in how Indian households consume television content.

Why People Are Switching to OTT

1. On-Demand Content

OTT platforms allow users to watch content anytime, unlike DTH which follows fixed TV schedules.

2. Multi-Device Support

With OTT, users can watch on mobile, tablet, or smart TV. DTH works only on television sets.

3. Ad-Free Experience

Many streaming platforms offer ad-free viewing, which attracts younger audiences.

Why DTH Is Still Relevant in India

Despite the growth of OTT, DTH is far from disappearing. Millions of households still depend on satellite TV for several reasons.

1. Reliable Signal in Rural Areas

In many villages, high-speed internet is not available, making DTH the only reliable option.

2. Live TV and Sports

DTH still provides the best experience for live cricket, news, and regional TV channels.

3. Lower Cost for Families

A basic DTH plan is often cheaper than subscribing to multiple OTT platforms.

Hybrid Set-Top Boxes – The Future of TV

To stay competitive, DTH companies are launching hybrid set-top boxes that combine satellite TV with internet streaming. These devices allow users to watch both TV channels and OTT apps from a single remote control.

This hybrid model is expected to become the standard television solution in India over the next few years.

OTT Growth in India

India’s OTT audience has grown rapidly, with hundreds of millions of users streaming content online. The expansion of affordable mobile data and smart TVs has accelerated this shift toward digital entertainment.

This growth is one of the main reasons why traditional television companies are changing their business models.

DTH vs OTT – Which One Is Better?

Feature	DTH	OTT
Internet required	No	Yes
Live TV	Excellent	Depends on streaming
On-demand content	Limited	Very high
Device support	TV only	Multiple devices
Monthly cost	Fixed packs	Multiple subscriptions

Both technologies serve different needs, which is why they will likely coexist rather than replace each other completely.

What Will Happen to DTH in the Next 5 Years?

Industry experts predict that DTH services will continue to decline slowly in urban areas but remain stable in rural regions. Satellite TV providers are expected to shift toward:

OTT integration
IPTV services
bundled internet + TV packages

These changes will help them retain customers and compete with digital streaming platforms.

Conclusion

DTH is not dying, but it is evolving. While OTT platforms are growing rapidly and attracting younger viewers, satellite television continues to serve millions of households that rely on live TV and stable signal quality.

The future of television in India is likely to be a hybrid model where users combine DTH and OTT to get the best of both worlds.
